Mushroom muscimol is one of two main psychoactive compounds found in the red mushroom, and it is this compound that causes all the positive effects during microdosing with the mushroom.

The precursor to muscimol is ibotenic acid. In a freshly picked mushroom, the amount of ibotenic acid exceeds the amount of muscimol by 60 times. Only during the drying process does ibotenic acid convert to muscimol.

Mushroom muscimol actively interacts with GABA (1) receptors and stimulates their function. GABA is a neurotransmitter that transmits signals between neurons in the parasympathetic nervous system.

The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for controlling the organs in a state of rest and relaxation. When GABA binds to receptors, it leads to a decrease in the excitation of neurons and a decrease in the activity of the nervous system. Thanks to the stimulation of GABA, you become calmer. Therefore, mushroom muscimol calms the nervous system.

A 1996 study in Germany (3) showed the effect of mushroom muscimol on sleep. Mushroom muscimol increased the deep sleep phase several times.

The deep sleep phase is one of the stages of slow-wave sleep. During deep sleep, important processes take place: the accumulation of necessary substances for the full functioning of the body, the synthesis of amino acids, regenerative processes, as well as the production of somatotropic hormone (growth hormone).

Mushroom muscimol affects the production of the hormones dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This manifests itself in a raised mood, the appearance of confidence and courage, and the removal of anxiety.

Mushroom muscimol improves mood

A study in 1989 (2) showed that mushroom muscimol reduces the activity of MAO.

MAO is an enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.

Mushroom muscimol and smoking A study in 2010 showed that the administration of mushroom muscimol to the insular cortex of the brain reduced the activity of this part due to the inhibitory effect of mushroom muscimol, which, in turn, led to a decrease in the desire to smoke (8).

Mushroom muscimol and alcohol Mushroom muscimol and alcohol interact with the same neurotransmitter - GABA. When mushroom muscimol is administered, alcohol simply has nothing to interact with, as mushroom muscimol takes its place.
