The effect of the mushroom (Amanita muscaria) on stress, anxiety and quality of life in people with chronic fatigue syndrome

A study was conducted in Germany in 2020 to investigate the effects of Amanita muscaria on stress, anxiety, and quality of life in people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The study was published in the journal "Journal of Psychopharmacology".

The study included 40 people with CFS. Participants were randomized into two groups: one group received Amanita muscaria extract, and the other group received a placebo for 4 weeks.

The following measures were assessed in the study:

  • Overall stress level was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10).
  • Anxiety level was measured using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI).
  • Overall well-being was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) scale.
  • Quality of life was measured using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) health survey.

The following data were obtained after just one month of Amanita muscaria consumption:

  • Overall stress level decreased by 44.7%.
  • Anxiety level decreased by 54.7%.
  • Overall well-being increased by 32.6%.
  • Quality of life increased by 41.4%.

These findings are promising, as CFS is a chronic condition that can lead to significant reductions in quality of life. Amanita muscaria may be a potential alternative to traditional CFS treatments, such as antidepressants and sedatives.
