Phallus impudicus (Stinkhorn mushroom) - is one of the most amazing and famous medicinal mushrooms. What makes it so remarkable? Its appearance and, of course, its properties. It contains a number of biologically active compounds, among which polyphenols and flavonoids play an important role. Polyphenols are known for their antioxidant properties, allowing them to neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress. Flavonoids, in particular, have the ability to strengthen the immune system and combat inflammatory processes. The Stinkhorn mushroom is effective in treating the following diseases*:
- immune deficiency
- neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke aftermath)
- cardiovascular diseases
- arthritis
- treatment of inflammatory processes
Mechanisms of Action
- Support of the immune system. Studies have shown that the Stinkhorn mushroom affects macrophages, such as RAW 264.7 cells. It is known that macrophages are involved in the homeostasis of the body, participating in various immune reactions, such as innate and acquired immunity.
- Antiviral action. Studies have shown that the Stinkhorn extract has a high index against influenza viruses, such as human influenza virus A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2) and avian influenza virus A/chicken/Kurgan/05/2005 (H5N1). Results showed that it is 57.14% more effective than the antiviral drug Tamiflu. (Tamara V. Teplyakova et al., 2024)
- Antioxidant action. Extracts of the Stinkhorn mushroom have the ability to neutralize free radicals due to their high polyphenol content. This helps prevent cell damage and reduces the risk of developing various diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke aftermath) and cardiovascular diseases (An et al., 2019).
- Anti-inflammatory action. Studies have shown that Stinkhorn extract effectively reduces inflammatory processes by decreasing the production of nitric oxide (NO) in macrophage cells. This allows the mushroom to be used to treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and others (Ryu et al., 2003).
- Anti-cholinesterase action. The anti-cholinesterase action lies in the mushroom's ability to inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes, which break down acetylcholine and butyrylcholine in the body. Acetylcholine is an important neurotransmitter that facilitates the transmission of nerve impulses. Inhibiting these enzymes helps maintain acetylcholine levels in the brain, which can be beneficial for improving memory and cognitive functions, especially in patients with Alzheimer's disease (Nguyen et al., 2013).
