Description
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is one of the most valuable medicinal mushrooms, which has been used in Eastern medicine for over 2400 years. It is also called the "mushroom of immortality" due to its ability to improve health, enhance mental development, extend life, and strengthen the immune system.
In 2022, the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology published a comprehensive scientific study confirming the antioxidant, antitumor, antibacterial, and other beneficial properties of the mushroom.

Studies confirm that reishi positively affects:
  • stimulation and support of the immune system;
  • improvement of psycho-emotional state;
  • normalization of sleep;
  • enhancement of cognitive functions;
  • cardiovascular diseases and cholesterol levels;
  • reduction of blood pressure;
  • cancer conditions;
  • alleviation of allergic disease symptoms;
  • treatment of acute and chronic pain;
  • reduction of inflammation in arthritis;
  • support of hormonal (estrogenic) balance in women during menopause;
  • type II diabetes;
  • neuromuscular diseases (myopathy);
  • neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases;
  • hepatoprotective effects;
  • acceleration of wound healing;
  • protection against aging (anti-aging effect);
  • antiviral action against herpes, hepatitis, and enterovirus 71;
  • suppression of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella.

General nutritional composition of reishi

Reishi contains many biologically active compounds, including triterpenoids, polysaccharides, phenols, sterols, as well as proteins and lipids. These components give it powerful medicinal properties. Polysaccharides, particularly β-glucans, are popular for supporting the immune system, while triterpenoids exhibit antitumor and antioxidant activity.

Immunomodulatory and antitumor effects of reishi

Reishi polysaccharides can stimulate the immune system by activating macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and T-lymphocytes. This enhances and improves the body's immune defense, which is a crucial factor in fighting viral and oncological diseases.
Reishi also demonstrates anticancer activity. Triterpenic acids contained in it can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, induce apoptosis (natural cell death), and reduce metastasis. Studies have shown that these components are effective against various types of cancer, including breast, lung, liver, and intestinal cancers.

Antioxidant properties of reishi

Reishi is a powerful antioxidant due to its high content of polysaccharides and triterpenoids. These compounds help combat oxidative stress — a process that causes damage to cells and tissues. Antioxidants from reishi can reduce free radical levels in the blood, decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and slowing down aging processes.

Antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties of reishi

Studies show that reishi can help combat various viruses, including influenza, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis, and even HIV. Triterpenoids formed in it can suppress viral replication, making it a promising agent for support during viral infections. It is also effective against fungal and bacterial infections, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and others. Moreover, studies have shown that some reishi extracts exhibit higher antimicrobial activity than antibiotics such as streptomycin and penicillin.

Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activity of reishi

Reishi, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, can successfully suppress acute and chronic inflammation by significantly reducing cytokines and chemokines, alleviating conditions such as arthritis or colitis.
Reishi’s neuroprotective activity is also impressive. It has been found that this mushroom can improve memory and learning ability, as well as reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Scientists have reported that a mixture of triterpenoid compounds stimulates neuron viability and reduces fatigue. Moreover, long-term use of reishi as an auxiliary agent in the treatment of neurological disorders can slow the progression of diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Reishi mushrooms also have the ability to lower cholesterol levels in the blood, improve liver function, and exhibit anti-gout and antihypertensive activity.
Consuming reishi can significantly improve overall health, help fight numerous diseases, and boost immunity. Thanks to its properties, this mushroom becomes an indispensable and powerful ally for improving general well-being and preventing various diseases, including inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, infections, nervous system disorders, and even cancer.
